German hospitality turnover fell 1.3% in August
Germany's hospitality industry recorded a monthly decline in inflation-adjusted turnover in August 2026. Restaurants posted a sharper contraction than accommodation businesses.
Turnover in Germany's hospitality sector declined by 1.3% in real terms and 1.2% in nominal terms in August 2026 compared with July, after calendar and seasonal adjustment. Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) reported the preliminary figures on Tuesday, October 20.
Against August 2025, price-adjusted revenue was down 4.2%, while unadjusted nominal turnover increased by 2.7%. The divergence indicates that the annual rise in cash revenue did not translate into growth after prices were taken into account.
Accommodation providers, including hotels, achieved a 0.4% real monthly gain and a 0.3% nominal increase. Their turnover was 0.4% lower in real terms than a year earlier but 4% higher at current prices.
Food and beverage services registered a 1.8% real decline from July and a 1.7% nominal fall. Compared with August 2025, restaurant turnover dropped 5.4% after price adjustment but rose 2.4% nominally. Destatis also revised July's real monthly increase to 1.9% from an initial 1.5%.
