Germany’s overnight stays slipped 1.1% in August
German accommodation providers recorded 58.7 million overnight stays in August 2026. Growth in international demand did not offset a decline in domestic stays.
Overnight stays at German accommodation businesses fell to 58.7 million in August 2026, down 1.1% from the same month a year earlier. Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) reported the preliminary figures on Friday, October 9.
Domestic guests accounted for 48.8 million stays, a year-on-year decrease of 1.6%. Overnight stays by visitors from abroad moved in the opposite direction, rising 1.3% to 9.9 million.
Despite the August decline, the January-to-August total reached a record 340.8 million, 0.5% above the comparable 2025 period and 0.4% higher than the previous 2024 peak. The survey covers hotels, guesthouses, holiday accommodation, campsites and other tourism-related establishments with at least 10 beds or camping pitches.
