Germany’s household saving rate stands well above EU average
German households posted a gross saving rate of 18.9% in 2025, compared with 14.3% across the European Union. Switzerland remained markedly higher among comparable economies.
Households in Germany saved a larger share of their disposable gross income than those in many other industrialised countries in 2025. Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) reported the figures on Tuesday, October 27.
Germany’s gross household saving rate was 18.9%, against an EU average of 14.3%. France recorded 17.8%, the Netherlands 17.4%, Austria 15.7% and Italy 10.8%, while the United States stood at 10.7%. Switzerland reached 27.4%, reflecting the greater importance of private pension provision there.
The German rate also averaged 19.1% over the 2016-2025 period. It held at 18.9% in the first half of 2026 after reaching 19.6% in 2024; the pandemic-era peak was 22.9% in 2020, when reduced consumption lifted household saving.
The gross rate measures savings as a share of disposable income before depreciation, including depreciation linked mainly to housing. Figures for 2025 and the first six months of 2026 remain provisional.
