German producer prices climbed 6.7% in September
Germany recorded its sharpest annual increase in industrial producer prices since March 2023, driven primarily by higher energy costs.
Producer prices for industrial goods sold in Germany rose 6.7% year on year in September 2026. The index also advanced 1.9% from August, marking the strongest annual increase in three and a half years.
The Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) reported the figures on Tuesday, October 20. Excluding energy, prices were up 3.2% from September 2025 and edged 0.1% higher month on month.
Energy costs increased 14.9% over the year and 5.8% from August. Destatis linked a 51.3% surge in petroleum product prices to hostilities in Iran and the wider Middle East; light heating oil was 91.8% more expensive, while fuel prices gained 48.6%.
Intermediate goods rose 6.4%, led by a 14% increase in metals and a 31.4% jump in copper and semi-finished copper products. Capital goods and durable consumer goods also became more expensive, while consumer goods declined 1.8% as food prices fell 4.1%.
