Two senior representatives of the Association of Ukrainians in Poland appealed to the Lviv Regional Council after its October 20 vote to dedicate 2027 to the UPA, Roman Shukhevych and Oleh Olzhych in the region. Chairman Myroslav Skirka and secretary-general Myroslav Kupich published their letter on October 22.

inPoland.net.pl reported the appeal on Sunday, October 25. The authors expressed surprise and disapproval, arguing that the decision failed to account for the sensitivity of historical disputes in Poland.

Skirka and Kupich said close Polish-Ukrainian cooperation remained essential amid Russia’s aggression and required mutual respect and understanding. In their assessment, the regional council’s move creates uncertainty, erodes confidence and support, and works against Ukraine’s interests.

The letter also warned that the controversy shifts public attention in Poland away from deadly Russian attacks and their victims in Ukraine. According to the association’s leaders, groups seeking an end to assistance for Ukrainian resistance could exploit the issue, making restraint and continued dialogue particularly important.
