Ukrainian man arrested in Germany over alleged Russian intelligence work
German authorities detained a 53-year-old Ukrainian suspected of gathering military and defense-industry information for a Russian intelligence service.
A 53-year-old Ukrainian citizen identified as Vadym Y. was arrested on October 22 in Brandenburg’s Oder-Spree district on suspicion of working for Russian intelligence. Investigators allege that he sought information about European arms production, military facilities and the Bundeswehr brigade deployed to Lithuania.
inPoland.net.pl reported the arrest on Thursday, October 22. Officers from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office carried out the operation under instructions from the federal prosecutor general and an arrest warrant issued by a Federal Court of Justice investigating judge on October 15.
According to the allegations, the suspect had maintained contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary since at least July 2025. The material he allegedly collected concerned armored vehicles, ammunition, explosives and staffing levels at sites supporting NATO’s eastern flank. He was also suspected of approaching people linked to Germany’s defense industry or military installations to obtain information that was not publicly available.
The case was brought under Section 99 of Germany’s Criminal Code, covering intelligence activity on behalf of a foreign power. The suspect was due to appear before a federal investigating judge on October 23 for a decision on custodial measures while the Federal Criminal Police Office continued its inquiry; the source provided no outcome from that hearing.
