Poland is prepared to move border procedures with Ukraine entirely to the Polish side of the frontier if conditions in Ukraine create risks for officers and travelers, the Interior Ministry said. Under the proposal, Polish and Ukrainian personnel would conduct the checks together.

The position was reported by inPoland.net.pl on Tuesday, October 20. The ministry stressed that Ukrainian officers would not operate independently inside Poland, as current Schengen rules restrict third-country services from carrying out border controls on their own.

Delegations from the two countries previously discussed the arrangement at the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing. Its purpose would be to keep cross-border traffic moving if Ukrainian checkpoint infrastructure were damaged and to reduce exposure to Russian attacks.

Warsaw has not yet issued final approval. The plan would require a notification procedure involving the European Commission and would also cover regulatory checks on goods. It has drawn objections from some Polish right-wing politicians, including European Parliament member Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik.
