Germany’s consumer price index increased by 3.3% year on year in September 2026, accelerating from 2.9% in August. Prices also advanced by 0.6% from the previous month, confirming the preliminary estimates.

The Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) reported the figures on Tuesday, October 13. The agency said September produced the highest inflation reading since December 2023, with energy prices again accounting for much of the increase.

Energy products cost 14.9% more than a year earlier. Motor fuels surged by 37.1%, while light heating oil rose by 74.9%. By contrast, electricity, natural gas and district heating remained cheaper than in September 2025.

Food inflation was comparatively subdued at 0.4%, although eggs and fresh vegetables registered marked increases. Service prices gained 2.7%, while core inflation excluding food and energy held at 2.4% for a third consecutive month.
