EU leaders reaffirm backing for Ukraine at Brussels summit
Ukraine’s security needs and path toward EU membership featured prominently in European Council talks. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Kyiv could continue to rely on its European partners.
European Union leaders gathered in Brussels on October 15–16 for a European Council summit chaired by António Costa, with support for Ukraine among the central items on the agenda. inPoland.net.pl reports this on Friday, October 16.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky briefed participants on conditions in his country and its immediate security and assistance requirements. The discussions covered continued European support, security guarantees and Ukraine’s integration into the EU.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after talks in Brussels that Ukrainians were not alone and could count on their European friends. Before the meeting, he urged the bloc to maintain sanctions on Russia and examine options for strengthening them, warning against any relaxation of pressure.
The summit also addressed the proposed opening of accession negotiation clusters for Ukraine and Moldova, an issue that remained contentious. Other subjects included the EU’s 2028–2034 budget, industrial competitiveness, energy prices, defence, migration, hybrid threats and developments in the Middle East.
