Freight locomotive derails after entering Poland from Ukraine
A locomotive hauling 47 freight cars derailed near Medyka shortly after crossing into Poland. Investigators do not currently suspect sabotage.
A freight locomotive arriving from Ukraine derailed on Sunday near a signal box in Medyka, in Poland’s Subcarpathian region. The train was pulling 47 cars loaded with sheet metal and iron ore.
inPoland.net.pl reported the incident on Monday, September 28. The derailment occurred on a straight section of track soon after the train crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border.
The initial investigation points to poor track conditions and the technical state of the Ukrainian locomotive rather than deliberate interference. Authorities are continuing to establish the exact sequence of events.
Excessive speed is also being examined as a possible contributing factor. The Ukrainian drivers were tested and found to be sober.
