German petrol and diesel output rises in first half
Germany’s refineries raised fuel production in the first six months of 2026 as import volumes fell by nearly a quarter.
German refineries produced 11.0 million tonnes of motor petrol, including aviation fuel, in the first half of 2026, an increase of 1.8% from a year earlier. Diesel output advanced more sharply, rising 9.4% to 15.8 million tonnes.
Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) reported the figures on Thursday, October 1. The value of petrol production climbed 16.7% to €3.4 billion, while the value of diesel manufactured jumped 42.4% to €6.4 billion.
Imports moved in the opposite direction. Petrol inflows dropped 23.0% to 525,000 tonnes and diesel imports declined 23.9% to 858,000 tonnes, although their values fell much less or increased. Germany exported more fuel than it imported, with diesel shipments abroad growing 18.7% to 2.06 million tonnes.
Energy tax receipts from petrol reached €15.5 billion in 2025, up 1.5% on the year but 12.6% below their 2010 level. Diesel tax revenue slipped 1.8% from 2024 to €17.8 billion.
