German household power and gas prices decline
Households in Germany paid less for electricity and natural gas in the first half of 2026, though prices remained well above pre-energy-crisis levels.
German household electricity prices averaged 37.97 euro cents per kilowatt-hour in the first half of 2026, down 6.4% from the previous six months. Natural gas cost an average of 11.58 cents per kilowatt-hour, a decline of 5.3%.
The figures were reported by the Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, on Wednesday, September 30. Compared with the first half of 2025, electricity was 4.9% cheaper and gas prices fell by 4.5%.
Lower grid fees, supported by federal subsidies for network operators, helped reduce electricity bills. Gas customers also benefited from the removal of the gas storage levy. Despite the latest declines, household electricity remained 16.4% more expensive than in early 2021, while gas was 80.7% higher.
The trend differed for non-household users. Their gas prices rose 1.8% from the second half of 2025 to 6.29 cents per kilowatt-hour, while preliminary electricity prices dropped 8.3% to 17.64 cents. The power data may later be revised to reflect planned industrial electricity relief.
