Serbia’s October 25 election ended more than a decade of political dominance by Aleksandar Vučić and handed the advantage to the opposition Student List. The final results had not yet been certified when its leading candidate, cardiologist and university professor Ilija Srdanović, discussed the movement’s plans.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported the details on Saturday, October 31. Srdanović said the parliamentary majority elected under the Student List banner would collectively choose nominees for prime minister and other government posts once the new legislature was constituted.

The group intends to keep Serbia on the path toward European Union membership, with an emphasis on judicial standards, civil rights, anti-corruption measures and media freedom. On relations with Russia, Srdanović stopped short of promising sanctions and argued that foreign policy should emerge from transparent public debate rather than decisions concentrated in one office.

The Student List also supports continued talks with Kosovo while maintaining Serbia’s constitutional position against recognition. International agreements already accepted by Belgrade could be examined for constitutional compliance, Srdanović said, although such scrutiny would not automatically result in their revision.
