Estonia Plans 150 Bunkers Near Russian Border
Most of the planned fortifications will be concentrated in the northeastern Ida-Viru region. The project forms part of a wider Baltic defense initiative.
Estonia intends to construct roughly 150 bunkers near its border with Russia as it strengthens defenses on NATO’s eastern flank. One hundred structures are expected to stand on state-owned land, while 50 would be placed on private property.
inPoland.net.pl reported the plans on Thursday, October 29. Estonian Defense Minister Martin Herem told journalists a day earlier that the installations would improve the country’s defensive capacity, but he did not disclose how the sites would be used.
The plan also calls for the 1st Combat Brigade to move from the country’s interior to a position at least 50 kilometers from the Russian frontier. According to Herem, the relocation would allow the unit to respond more quickly in the event of a possible attack.
The bunkers are part of the Baltic Defence Line, a joint undertaking by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The three countries are developing the system amid concerns over drone incidents, airspace violations, sabotage and other forms of Russian hybrid activity.
