Ukraine is preparing to add a 2,000-hryvnia banknote to its currency range, with the first notes scheduled to enter circulation on September 4, 2026. The National Bank of Ukraine said commercial banks will be able to collect and distribute the new denomination from that date.

The note will feature Vasyl Stus, the Ukrainian poet, literary critic, human rights advocate and Soviet-era political prisoner. Central bank officials described him as a figure who bridges the cultural and civic traditions represented on Ukrainian money and embodies resistance to repression.

September 4 carries particular significance in Stus’s biography. On that date in 1965, he joined Viacheslav Chornovil and Ivan Dziuba in publicly protesting the arrests of Ukrainian intellectuals during a film premiere in Kyiv. Stus died on September 4, 1985, while imprisoned at the Perm-36 maximum-security camp.

The central bank presented the new denomination as a response to long-term economic and cash-circulation trends rather than as an expansion of the money supply. It said average monthly wages have roughly tripled and consumer prices have doubled since the ₴1,000 note was introduced in 2019. Cash in circulation, meanwhile, rose from almost ₴390 billion to more than ₴970 billion by July 1, 2026.

Another factor is the growing dominance of the existing highest-value note. According to the NBU, ₴1,000 banknotes now account for more than 55% of the total value of notes in circulation, a level that central banks commonly view as evidence that a larger denomination may improve cash management.

The regulator stressed that issuing ₴2,000 notes will not amount to creating additional money. They will be exchanged for balances held electronically or replace other denominations, including worn and damaged notes. On that basis, the bank said the launch should have no direct effect on inflation or the foreign-exchange market.

More than 20 security features have been incorporated into the design. They include a multi-tone portrait watermark, an embedded security thread with ultraviolet and magnetic properties, raised print, microtext, a see-through ₴2,000 register and a latent denomination image visible from an acute angle.

A prominent blue-and-yellow windowed thread will create an animated optical effect when the note is tilted, transforming Ukraine’s trident emblem into the hryvnia symbol. A separate SPARK feature will shift gradually from purple to a gold-green shade. The NBU says the windowed Anima Colour thread represents a new application of the technology in banknote security.

Several million notes are expected in the initial production run. The two-month preparation period is intended to allow banks, cash-handling companies and service providers to update ATMs, self-service terminals and sorting equipment. The 2026 issue will carry the signature of NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy.
