Historic Grotto Reopens at Odesa Art Museum
A nearly two-century-old underground landmark has been revived through contemporary art, sound and digital technology.
The Odesa National Fine Arts Museum has unveiled a renewed version of its Grotto, one of the city’s most enigmatic historic spaces. Telegram channel @odesaoda reported the opening on Friday, October 2.
Built almost 200 years ago, the romantic underground complex originally featured an artificial waterfall and a network of galleries. Its new presentation combines artistic installations and sound with technology designed to engage visitors with Odesa’s past.
Museum organizers say the project carries particular weight during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, as cultural sites and collective memory remain under threat. The restoration aims not only to preserve the landmark but also to make its history accessible to a new audience.
