Polish parliament was set to revisit Sunday trading rules
A proposed amendment would permit two shopping Sundays each month while guaranteeing double pay for retail employees who work those days.
Poland’s Sejm was due to begin examining a bill on November 6 that would loosen the country’s restrictions on Sunday retail activity. The proposal seeks to establish two trading Sundays per month.
inPoland.net.pl reported the plans on Friday, November 6. The amendment was submitted in June 2024 by lawmaker Ryszard Petru, who later said its progress had been held up by the Sejm’s Social Policy and Family Committee.
Under the draft, retail staff working on Sundays would receive twice their regular pay. Petru argued that the change could benefit shoppers, employees and Polish businesses, and said he hoped committee discussions would produce a compromise.
Polling cited in the report indicated that more than 60% of Polish respondents wanted additional shopping Sundays. A complete end to the ban was backed by 27.5%, while 14.3% favored prohibiting Sunday trade altogether.
