Iryna Vereshchuk, deputy head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, appealed to Lviv regional councillors on October 21 over a resolution they had adopted on October 20. The measure declared 2027 the year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and Roman Shukhevych and was met with incomprehension on the Polish side.

The appeal was reported by inPoland.net.pl on Thursday, October 22. Vereshchuk asked the councillors to act with pragmatism and responsibility toward the state, arguing that local decisions should not disregard Ukraine’s foreign-policy priorities.

She pointed to Poland’s importance for military and economic logistics, including the transit of weapons and other essential assistance. Vereshchuk also cited Warsaw’s role in Ukraine’s path toward the European Union and NATO, as well as the presence of nearly one million Ukrainians who had found refuge in Poland.

Vereshchuk said disputes over historical memory required particular care during the war. In her assessment, any deterioration in Polish-Ukrainian relations would benefit Russia, and she urged the regional council not to allow that outcome.
